DIRECTIONS TO SILLICO
BY PLANE:
The nearest airport is Pisa. You can make big
savings by booking your flight early. It is
better to fly-in in the morning and fly-out in
the afternoon or evening, to be able to travel
to and from Sillico by train. Check the
TRENITALIA website.
BY
TRAIN:
Check the TRENITALIA website. There is a
station at Pisa Airport. Your destination is
Castelnuovo di Garfagnana. Your route will take
you via Pisa Centrale and Lucca.
You will need to change at Pisa Centrale for
Lucca. You might also need to change in Lucca,
although some trains will take you
straight-through.
When checking timetables, make sure you are
looking at PARTENZE (departures) and not ARRIVI
(arrivals). Platform numbers are to be found in
the BINARIO or BIN column. To avoid a
long wait at the airport station, you can take
the NAVETTA (shuttle bus) from outside the
front door of the airport to Pisa Centrale.
Look for trains terminating in AULLA or PIAZZA
AL SERCHIO and alight in Castelnuovo di
Garfagnana. Train tickets must be validated
before travel in the yellow machines found on
the platforms. Tickets may be obtained from the
desks in the far end wall of the airport,
visible on the right as you come out of
ARRIVALS.
BY
ROAD:
Drive across the front of the airport building
and follow the GREEN autostrada signs,
initially northwards towards GENOA and shortly
afterwards towards FIRENZE and LUCCA. Exit at
Lucca Est (the second Lucca exit). Turn left
and drive around the city walls, following the
BLUE (non autostrada) road signs through Lucca
towards “Castelnuovo Garfagnana” or
“Castelnuovo G”
or “Garfagnana”.
A few miles outside Lucca, after the orange-lit
tunnels, take care to keep to the right and
turn right OVER the new, funky bridge with the
steel arch. Warning! There’s not much time for
this decision!
Castelnuovo is now by-passed by a new
(orange-lit) tunnel. Take this and turn right
at the next roundabout.
You will see a new CO-OP on your right. Shortly
afterwards is a sign to Sillico, on your right
by a small car park and telephone box. Have
faith! 7 kms later you will arrive in Sillico.
Watch out for hairpin bends and do not go
straight-on at the first one!
Please
contact me if you need more “long distance”
information.
Dinner is planned for 8 pm on your arrival day.
